Belle Isle: Olmsted's Least-Known Masterwork

Belle Isle: Olmsted's Least-Known Masterwork

982-acre island in the Detroit River, Olmsted-designed in the 1880s. The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory is the jewel — a 1904 glass dome of palms and orchids maintaining tropical confidence through Detroit winters with steam heat and conviction. The dome smells of wet earth and warm chlorophyll, and winter morning light through the glass feels like therapy.

Five-mile perimeter loop with views of both skylines — Detroit and Windsor, two countries. Freighters carry cargo between Lake Huron and Erie while you walk. Standing between nations on an Olmsted island watching commerce float past is layered in a way unique to Detroit.

Fall for hardwood color and the Conservatory contrast — cold outside, tropical inside. $12 annual Michigan Recreation Passport. The James Scott Fountain on the west end runs May-September. Best sunset-behind-the-city view on the island.
