Belle Isle at Dawn

Belle Isle at Dawn

982 acres in the Detroit River between the city and Windsor, Ontario. Cross the MacArthur Bridge at six AM when the light is pink and the city recedes immediately. Mature hardwoods — oaks, maples, elms that survived the blight. The air smells different here. Loamy. Like the island is exhaling.

The James Scott Memorial Fountain on the western tip is a white marble extravagance by Cass Gilbert. The perimeter road is six miles. The Detroit River moves beside you, carrying freighter traffic even at this hour — an enormous rust-streaked laker passed so close I could read the hull name. The central woods are tangled and wild. Deer browse in the meadows, completely unbothered. A great horned owl departed from a low branch with the silent, offended dignity of a librarian disturbed during lunch.

Late spring is ideal — May or early June, wildflowers and full leaf. Michigan Recreation Passport required for vehicle entry ($10). Bring binoculars for migration season. Come early, before the joggers claim the roads.
